Magebane

Magebane is a thrusting broadsword that glows in the presence of any kind of spell-caster.

History

Goras, of the Goblin Legion, is a goblin with Gigantism and a startling lack of Paranoia. He was forced to leave his tribe long ago and became an adventurer. He quickly developed an enmity for enemy wizards and sought the means to battle them effectively.

To this end, he had a special sword forged and enchanted. He used it to slaughter wizard after wizard. It eventually began to absorb a portion of the power of each wizard slain.

Campaign Use

Magebane is one of Goras' personal weapons. Goras is now Charda's zombie bodyguard. This weapon should make him a difficult opponent for any magic-wielding characters. It's curse should make the weapon too dangerous to keep after he is defeated, so it shouldn't become a long-term campaign problem.

Powers

  • The blade glows in the presence of spell-casters.
    • It also points at them by projecting a spike-like light beam toward them.
      • The color of the spike indicates the type of caster.
        • Blue = Wizard
        • Red = Priest/Shaman/etc.
        • Yellow = Witch/Warlock
        • Colors blend for any combination of the above.
      • Length of the spike indicates distance.
    • It has a 100 yard range limit.
  • The user gains a +4 to hit and damage vs. spell-casters with Magebane.
  • Attacks with Magebane ignore any kind of magical DR.
  • Spell-casters, magical beings, magical objects and spells (when appropriate) take double damage from any strike with Magebane.
    • Increase the damage multiplier by 1 for each spell-caster slain.
      • There is no upper limit.
      • This drains away by 1 each week, down to a minimum of double damage.

Curses

  • Any spell-caster attempting to pick up or hold Magebane will be burned for 1d damage per second.
    • This bypasses any form of DR or protective measure.
  • Anyone other than Goras wielding Magebane gains Obsession (Killing Wizards, 9 or less) for the duration.
    • This will require self-control rolls to avoid attacking companion wizards.
  • Any innate magical powers the wielder has will fail to function while holding Magebane.

Suggested Means of Destruction

  • Magebane can be disenchanted like any normal magic item.
