This is a form of Underdark-dwelling fungus that attaches itself to a host and then completely replaces it's skin with a hard, black carapace.

It has a few advantages, but most find the disadvantages too much to deal with. When it's host dies, their body mass is converted into the fungus. It can thus be considered both a parasite and a symbiotic life-form.
